Our pick of the week: The story, the stat, the quote, the tweet
The stroke of a belly and the flash of some camera bulbs sent the world abuzz with excitement at the news that former Destiny's Child singer Beyoncé Knowles (right) is pregnant. And what better way to share the joy than to take to Twitter and voice your congratulations. Trumping the death of Bin Laden and the Japanese tsunami, the event raised a world-record breaking 8,868 tweets per second. Although it might not show that we care less about the plight of a country's population during a natural disaster, or the demise of the world's most wanted man – it highlights an irrational excitement at the perhaps predictable impregnation of a woman who has, after all, been married (to Jay-Z) for more than three years.
Beyonce's pregnant, breaks Twitter record
MANILA, Philippines – Beyoncé’s “big VMA [MTV Video Music Awards] moment” where she revealed her pregnancy to the world set a new record for microblogging site Twitter for most number of tweets per second (TPS).
This is according to a tweet posted by Twitter’s Carolyn Penner on its PR feed, @twitterglobalpr, on Aug. 30 at 5:08 AM.
“Last night at 10:35pm ET, Beyonce's big MTV #VMA moment gave Twitter a record bump: 8,868 Tweets per second,” Penner posted.
The previous record was at 7,196 TPS made during the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals held in Japan on July 17, as posted on Twitter’s official account (@twitter).
The 2011 VMA was held on Sunday evening, US time, at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California.
“Tonight I want you to stand up on your feet. I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me!” Beyoncé said as she hit the stage.
After performing her song “Love on Top,” the singer threw her mic on the floor and unbuttoned her purple blazer to reveal her bump as she happily rubbed her tummy.
But some hours before her performance, Beyoncé already broke the news on the red carpet.
“OMG Beyonce just made a huge announcement on the #vma carpet! #baby!!!!!” a tweet on MTV’s verified account (@MTV) read, accompanied by a photo of the star showing off her baby bump in a bright red long gown.
This will be Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z’s first child after getting married in a secret ceremony on April 4, 2008. In the past, the couple had to deal with a number of false reports on her supposed pregnancy.
Meanwhile, Beyoncé’s video for “Run the World (Girls)” won Best Choreography in a Video. It was also nominated in the Best Female Video and Best Cinematography in a Video categories.
Beyonce Pregnant 2011: How Jay-Z & B Kept Secret Before it Was Confirmed
The Beyonce pregnancy video made for a highly-talked about moment from this year's Video Music Awards, and one that was less controversial, more exciting and joyous. Many people continue to wonder how long Beyonce has been pregnant for exactly. According to News.com.au, it's speculated that she's been pregnant for as long as four months now. Keeping baby news a secret is a tough gig for one of the most famous couples in the world. So how did Beyonce and Jay-Z do it?
The Australian news site notes that a stylist from The Beauty Tutor says Beyonce kept her baby bump secret with "strategic styling." This includes a special dress she wore which had a silver flap over her tummy, drawing attention away from the bump. Other ways the singer has drawn attention from that area include big jewelry and accessories.
It's also noted that because Jay-Z and Beyonce have so much money, they have a lot of means of hiding something like this at their disposal. That would include private jets, convoys of cars, and hotels with multiple exits aka "escape routes." All of these will make it tough for paparazzi to snap photos of the couple and reveal a baby bump early.
It's great that the couple kept Beyonce's pregnant tummy under wraps for so long. They've always been rather private about their relationship, and the big moment when it was confirmed at MTV Video Music Awards made it extra special. For all the world knows, MTV may have pitched in to help keep the secret until their show. They love the attention, and knew this couple didn't want attention about it for months. Smart planning on the parts of everyone!
